WAAB gives the opportunity to integrate different multimedia data communication technologies, ATM and Wireless LANs, with the necessary data protection for use in small Internet/Intranet business and in multimedia services via ATM. This high power processing, reliable, and secure inter-networking architecture will result in the development of a large number of communication products in this specific area. The WAAB, which acts as an Access Point (AP) to the WLAN, receives the packets that are destined outside the WLAN and forwards them to the proper ATM destinations (VCs) by using either LAN Emulation functions (LANE) or IP over ATM. WAAB consists of four different components. The first one is a low-cost, small dimension design, main board with a high-end processing unit, which utilises multiple bus interfaces for numerous communication cards. Since Electronic Commerce applications are actually high bit rates transactions, the WAAB board supports the PCI (PC/104-plus) bus architecture. Additionally, ISA (PC/104) bus architecture is supported in order to make this design compatible with a great number of add-on cards. The second component is the Wireless VirtualNet PCMCIA adapter, which provides all processing and functionality needed for the Medium Access Protocol (MAC) of wireless LANs focusing but not limited to the IEEE 802.11 standard. This wireless LAN card supports up to 2 Mbps data rates. The third component is a PC/104-plus ATM network interface card, which implements SAR (Segmentation And Reassembly) and PHY functions at 155 Mbps. Finally, the last component is a PC/104-plus adapter, which is actually a ciphering/deciphering component known as Independent Security Engine System (ISES). This encryption engine is based on the ISES chip and supports the firewall and data privacy architecture. The use of this high power processing, reliable, and secure inter-networking architecture will result in the development of a large number of communication products in this specific area.
