REMPI provides an electronic commerce customer interface with postal services. It will result in a totally new form of access to, and payment for, postal services and provide the foundation for the development of new customer-oriented services such as proof of acceptance, day-certain delivery and tracking and tracing of normal mail. REMPI improves communication channels, simplifies reporting procedures, improves productivity and reduces costs. REMPI supports the electronic transfer of data between the Mailer and the Post and provides proof of postage accounting using digital printing techniques.
REMPI has specified electronic interface standards, is developing prototype systems and services, and will test these in operational pilots in Germany and the United Kingdom.
REMPI will test, operationally evaluate and contribute to: - standards for customer identification of mail items and the electronic communication of mail item data;
- the development of open, network based, electronic payment for mail services, linked to computer generated printing of payment evidence on mail pieces;
- the use of encryption for privacy, data-integrity and authentication purposes; - the reconciliation of electronic payment data with physical mail services provided; and, - the electronic provision of proof of acceptance and tracking services to customers.
