COMPASS's objective is to develop the necessary standards to enable reusable, distributed and interoperable accounting components.
The deliverables of COMPASS are two implementations of the Object Management Group's (OMG's) Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA)-based General Ledger Facility specification. These products will be able to interoperate with components which are based on Microsoft COM and Sun JAVA BEANS architectures. The COM products will be both Year 2000 and Euro compliant, extremely flexible, scalable and extendible. In the UK alone, 40% of organisations intend to purchase new accounting systems within the next 12 months. The two implementations are taking contrasting technical approaches. Economica SA is building accounting components and Real Objects Ltd. is wrapping a legacy accountancy system. Pilot implementations will be installed at SINTEF (components) and Software Box Ltd. (legacy wrapping). The benefits which will accrue from COMPASS are those to be realised from adopting platform independent, location-transparent, component/object-based application software with standard interfaces. Such software is interoperable with in-house software and third party software. It is extendible, scalable and inexpensive to maintain.
