ACCESS TO THE CENTRE FOR THE THEORY AND APPLICATION OF CATALYSIS IN QUEENS UNIVERSITY BELFAST

Ziel

The Centre for the Theory and Application of Catalysis (CenTACat) in Queens University Belfast is the leading laboratory in the UK for the investigation of applied catalysis and is one of the top-ten such research groups in Europe. A unique feature of CenTACat is the integration in one centre of state of the art expertise ranging from high level computational chemistry (involving chemists and physicists) through the use of fast transient and spectroscopic techniques for investigating reaction mechanisms (involving chemists), to engineering applications (involving process and mechanical engineers).

The objectives of CenTACat are:
- to provide European researchers with access to world class facilities for the investigation of catalytic processes using state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical tools;
- to provide opportunities for gaining experience in the use of specialist techniques in the research context of applied catalysis for students, postdoctoral fellows, and young academic researchers from the EU and the Associated States.
- to lay the foundations for further transnational collaborations between CenTACat and laboratories across the European community;
- to establish new transnational links and collaborations with relevant laboratories across Europe, particularly in the candidate countries and the less technically advanced countries that lack comparable facilities.

These objectives will be achieved:
- by providing access for users to the fully integrated, multidisciplinary equipment and expertise in CenTACat;
- by arranging research visits for users (1 week to 2 months) to maximise the access to specialised equipment in order to gain hands-on experience and to undertake specific experiments;
- by arranging visits in order to maximise the knowledge transfer between users and the key catalysis research staff in the Schools of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Physics, Control Engineering; and Mechanical Engineering in Queens University.
