Design and implementation of high data rate and robust multiple-antenna space-time modems for fourth generation broadband wireless communication systems

Obiettivo

A key point for 4G wireless systems will be to satisfy the raising need for high quality various broadband applications, as multimedia, high-speed Internet access, telephony and other. The challenge for physical layer designers is to develop higher data rate and reliable transmission systems, relying on a limited bandwidth and overcoming the severe impairments of wireless channels (multiple propagation paths, signal fading). Multiple antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver (namely multiple-input multiple-output - MIMO, systems) potentially allow to overcome these issues and achieve huge performance improvements, through the design of suitable coding and modulation algorithms (namely Space-Time Codes). They exploit antenna diversity to combat fading and can also provide data rate increase through multiple antenna layered transmission. This research proposal aims at developing and testing in a MIMO wireless testbed innovative efficient space-time modems, for broadband 4G wireless communication systems. The target is to extend the state of the art in multiple-antenna communications designing new algorithms for higher data rate systems, keeping a low error rate, at the same time identifying practical architectures that provide the desired performance with acceptable complexity. The performance of these new systems shall be verified through the development of hardware demonstrations and field trials. The research program is supported as return host institution by STMicroelectronics (Italy), top ranking European industry. The training will be carried out in the excellence research centre of University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), thus fostering the international co-operation between the two host organizations. The involved UCLA research team is coordinated by Prof. M. Fitz, active in cutting edge research programs investigating space-time coding communication theory, a field where he has led to important advances since several years.
