Obiettivo Nanostructure Laboratory of Faculty of Physics, University of Belgrade (NanoLab) is well recognized in European nanotube physics community for its original, full symmetry based theoretical, as well as optical and discharge experimental methods for carbon and inorganic nanotubes. Reinforcing this leading Serbian nanoscience research centre is of national importance regarding new technologies development and transfer, as well as dissemination of knowledge substantial for the technological progress. The aim of this project is to strengthen human and material resources of NanoLab, which is necessary to continue and improve high standards theoretical and experimental research and widen its scope. Significant contribution to the brain-drain preventing will be realized through new job opportunities in the cutting edge scientific field (FP6 priority theme 3), and permanent personal development within networking with the leading European research laboratories.Optical characterization methods for thin film growth monitoring, based on luminescence and interference effects, have been developed and applied in NanoLab to control growth of porous aluminium-oxide films used as templates for nanostructures growth. These methods will be combined with plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition, to produce nanotubes, nanoclusters and thin films. Special attention will be paid to clarify the growth mechanisms and role of plasma, and to develop new optical emission techniques for discharge parameters determination and discharge-surface interaction monitoring. For the optimal control of aluminium-oxide thin films, high resolution wide spectral range, fibber optic fluorimeter is necessary, sensitivity of discharge spectroscopic observations will be increased by low resolution, high light power spectrometer with detection system, and the purity of reacting gases in discharge chamber has to be improved by introducing turbomolecular pump.
