EMS Summer schools in pure and applied mathematics Second series

Final Activity Report Summary - EMSMATHSCHOOLS2 (EMS Summer schools in pure and applied mathematics Second series)

The project consisted in a series of thirteen summer schools covering a range of subjects of cutting edge interest both in pure and applied mathematics, in which European scientists are of world level. It continued a successful first series of eight schools organised along the same principles in 2004-2005 by the European Mathematical Society (EMS). The events were hosted by mathematical centres with a long experience in the organisation of conferences and summer schools. The scientific organisation was in the hands of prominent and experienced committees.

Two of the events were in partial differential equations, one in statistics, two in geometry, two in combinatorics, one in geometry and mathematical physics, one in industrial mathematics, one in stochastics and three in applications to mathematics to biology and medicine. There was a very strong component of training of young researchers by means of integrated courses and lectures at advanced level. Each event satisfied this condition of training of young researchers by leading experts who guaranteed a very high scientific quality of the events.

Mathematical research is at top level in Europe now. It is essential to show to a young generation of mathematicians that Europe is a place with scientific perspective. Europe will need a new generation of high class researchers in mathematics, both to replace preceding generations who will retire massively, and to participate in the new applications of mathematics to science and industry. Moreover, mathematics was also developed at top level in Central and Eastern Europe, and it is very important but also challenging for economic reasons to maintain that tradition. Concerning the gender issue, EMS has always made strong efforts to correct past inequities. The EMS summer schools second series strengthened all of these central principles of the mathematical community in Europe.
