Peptide Sensing Platforms for proteins and antibodies detection

Final Report Summary - PSP (Peptide Sensing Platforms for proteins and antibodies detection)

Project Overview:
The main objective of this project is to develop and optimize a novel, rapid, point-of-care method for the simultaneous detection of multiple diagnostic proteins. Through a multidisciplinary and complementary approach the fellow will be trained in protein and peptide folding, a field fundamental to develop the proposed biosensor platform. Training on peptide labeling with redox tags and on formation of peptide films on different sensor surfaces will be also exploited during the fellowship in order to achieve the final research objectives.

In summary the project’s objectives can thus be summarized as follows:
1) To develop point of care sensors based on peptides
2) To study effect of surface on the folding of biomolecules
3) To gain knowledge in protein and protein folding
4) To gain knowledge in surface effect analysis, electrochemical redox tags and formation of peptide films

During the outgoing and return phases the fellow carried out the experimental and research work as proposed in Annex I and developed different optical and electrochemical peptides and DNA/peptides based sensors for the detection of specific target antibodies.
Apart from the above summarized research results the fellow also reached important training and dissemination results. More specifically, during the period covered by the fellowship the fellow published 11 research papers in high Impact-Factor journals which also received important media attention. In all these papers the contribution from the Marie Curie fellowship was acknowledged.
Also, the fellow disseminated these results in very fruitful research meeting and invited lectures and keynote presentations at international meetings. Finally, the fellow was able to interact and collaborate with a wide range of different international collaborators.
This fellowship strongly contributed to the independence career of the fellow and will be a strong benefit for the EU scientific excellence because of the high impact of this research in many aspects of the real life. The expertise on peptide and polypeptide electrochemical sensors could significantly impact the safety, compliance and efficacy of diagnosis, therapies and medical procedures ranging from the detection of infectious diseases, the treatment of autoimmune diseases, and the routine monitoring of health and wellness.
