Objective Creep is the time-dependent, thermally assisted deformation of a component operating under stress. Metal pressure components such as boiler tubing, headers, and steam piping in fossil-fired power plants operate at thermal conditions (above ~1,000ºF [538ºC]) conducive to causing creep damage over the operating life of the component. To ensure safe and reliable operation of such components in service, utilities periodically use non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques to inspect these components for damage. These inspections are largely targeted at detecting late stage creep damage in which cracking is active in the component and provides qualitative rather than quantitative data.Recent advances in NDE technology have provided enhanced capabilities for incipient creep failure detection. CreepTest will seek to apply time reversal focusing and full matrix capture techniques that have already shown a capability to identify early stage creep damage. A library of defects will be produced with the aim of providing inspection limits and the probability of detection for the techniques developed in the project and thus enable accurate life cycle prediction for components under inspection. The objectives of the project will be:•To develop new ultrasonic phased NDE testing techniques for the detection of Type IV creep cracking•To determine the sensitivity of defect detection and the limits of technique/system/ultrasonic array performance.•To produce a field prototype NDE ultrasonic array system, signal processing and software for the examination of power plant steam pipe welds for creep damage.•Quantify results to assess the extent of creep detection and categorise into (i) cavitation formation (ii) cavitation coalescence (iii) formation of micro-cracking and (iv) macro-cracking.•To demonstrate the NDE systems performance on in-service, in-situ steam pipe welds and to validate the technique results against representative samples containing realistic creep defects Fields of science natural sciencescomputer and information sciencessoftwareengineering and technologyelectrical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineeringelectronic engineeringsignal processing Programme(s) FP7-SME - Specific Programme "Capacities": Research for the benefit of SMEs Topic(s) SME-2012-1 - Research for SMEs Call for proposal FP7-SME-2012 See other projects for this call Funding Scheme BSG-SME - Research for SMEs Coordinator APPLIED INSPECTION LIMITED Address Old colliery lane heath road holmewood S42 5RB Chesterfield United Kingdom See on map Region East Midlands (England) Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire East Derbyshire Activity type Private for-profit entities (excluding Higher or Secondary Education Establishments) Administrative Contact James Bailey (Mr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window EU contribution € 315 496,00 Participants (6) Sort alphabetically Sort by EU Contribution Expand all Collapse all ACUTECH EISAGOGES ANTIPROSOPEIES EPE Greece EU contribution € 261 255,00 Address Syrou street 3 144 52 Metamorfosi, athens See on map Activity type Private for-profit entities (excluding Higher or Secondary Education Establishments) Administrative Contact Theodoros Christidis (Mr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window INETEC-INSTITUT ZA NUKLEARNU TEHNOLOGIJU DRUSTVO S OGRANICENOM ODGOVORNOSCU ZA ISTRAZIVACKO RAZVOJNE I KONSULTING USLUGE, PROIZVODNJU I TRGOVINU Croatia EU contribution € 246 050,00 Address Dolenica 28 lucko 10 250 Zagreb See on map Region Hrvatska Grad Zagreb Grad Zagreb Activity type Private for-profit entities (excluding Higher or Secondary Education Establishments) Administrative Contact Iva Grković (Ms.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window TWI LIMITED United Kingdom EU contribution € 55 834,00 Address Granta park great abington CB21 6AL Cambridge See on map Region East of England East Anglia Cambridgeshire CC Administrative Contact David Hamper (Mr.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window ETHNICON METSOVION POLYTECHNION Greece EU contribution € 38 648,00 Address Heroon polytechniou 9 zographou campus 157 80 Athina See on map Region Αττική Aττική Κεντρικός Τομέας Αθηνών Activity type Higher or Secondary Education Establishments Administrative Contact Georgia Mertzelou (Mrs.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window KAUNO TECHNOLOGIJOS UNIVERSITETAS Lithuania EU contribution € 39 920,00 Address K donelaicio 73 LT-44029 Kaunas See on map Region Lietuva Vidurio ir vakarų Lietuvos regionas Kauno apskritis Activity type Higher or Secondary Education Establishments Administrative Contact Milda Beruliene (Ms.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window SCOTTISH AND SOUTHERN ENERGY PLC United Kingdom EU contribution € 40 797,00 Address Dunkeld road inveralmond hs 200 PH1 3AQ Perth See on map Activity type Private for-profit entities (excluding Higher or Secondary Education Establishments) Administrative Contact Nicola Mcnally (Mrs.) Links Contact the organisation Opens in new window Website Opens in new window
