fifth international conference on advanced semiconductor devices and microsystems - asdam 04

Final Report Summary - ASDAM 04 (fifth international conference on advanced semiconductor devices and microsystems)

ASDAM'04 conference brought together leading experts primarily from European Union Member States. The ASDAM '04 conference was devoted to the following topics: materials and nanotechnologies, nanostructures and nanodevices, modelling and characterisation, micro(nano)electromechanical systems.

Practically each conference topic was introduced by a leading European expert in the field. Besides invited talks there were plenary sessions and a poster session to illustrate the state-of-the-art and indicate future trends for every discussed topic. Invited talks, contributed papers and posters discussed the latest results of research and development in the field of new semiconductor nanodevices and microsystems.

One of the goals of the conference was also the stabilisation and increase of current RTD potential in the strategic research fields. It is expected that RTD, supported by training of researchers, will also have an increasing direct impact on development of information and communication as well as microsystem nanotechnologies in the EU. ASDAM conference has been already established as a meeting of scientists mainly from the central and east European countries and in the last issues more and more also from the EU Member States - this moment could strengthen the European Research Area (ERA).

As described the goal of the ASDAM conference directly corresponded to Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) objectives and needs of Specific Support Action (SSA) call, as it was directed to the narrower coupling between scientists from EU Member States. Up to now the prevalent number of participants used to be from central and east European states. The participation of the scientists from these countries at the conferences in EU states is still financially relatively expensive and is still not a common practice. The conference sessions were directly concentrated on FP6 activities, especially Thematic Area 3, nanotechnology and nanosciences. Many of focal topics treated nanostructures and nanodevices (also the section modelling and characterisation, though indirectly). New semiconductor knowledge-based materials like SiC, GaN, AlGaN, etc. were the object of invited lectures and many contributed papers.

Using the knowledge of the conference is straightforward and clear. Primary and the most direct dissemination is already being done by the conference participants in their laboratories and to their co-workers. Second and probably wider dissemination of the collected new results and research developments presented at the conference is through the conference proceedings. ASDAM proceedings are already well known among scientists from the branch and the papers from ASDAM proceedings used to be comparing to other conference proceedings relatively frequently cited.

The participants from the coorganiser institution, Slovak University of Technology, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology regularly attend the conference and use the new acquired knowledge in their teaching process. The same is true for every lecturer attending the conference from other universities.
