Obiettivo
The overall scientific objective of the Network is to link together the leading European laboratories working in the field of Glow Discharge (GD) Spectroscopy, to overcome the fragmentation in this research field and to implement a research programme to develop GD Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GD-OES) and GD Mass Spectrometry (GD-MS) as leading tools for the analysis of solids, layers, interfaces and, for a particular technique, liquids. Improved analytical techniques will in turn improve materials develop ment and production, and hence the competitiveness of European industry. The proposed Network consists of 16 teams, 7 from Universities, 4 from Research Institutes and 5 from Industry (instrument manufacturers and users of the technique). 12 partners come from 8 EC states (including 2 from newly joined states), 1 from Associated States and 3 INCO countries. It is intended to appoint 10 ESRs, each for 36 months (360 person-months) and 5 ERs (a total of 102 person-months.) A detailed programme of experimental and modelling tasks is proposed to address the issues at the forefront of GD-OES and GD-MS activities.
The overall training objective is that the Researchers appointed by the Network, and those in the Partner teams, shall receive a broader training than obtainable at a single establishment. This would include an overview of analytical techniques, particularly those relating to surface analysis, a detailed knowledge of the scientific and technological basis of the complementary techniques of GD-OES and GD-M S. They will also develop complementary skills and the ability to work within a team with others from different countries and cultures. The transfer of knowledge (TOK) objective is to develop close intercommunication between the various groups in the Network, between the Network and the remainder of the GD community and between the GD community and potential users of the technique.
