Obiettivo
INTACT invites for research into the mental health of women exemplified by eating disorders (ED). ED are serious disorders affecting mainly female adolescents and young women. They are relatively common in the industrialised societies and are rapidly increasing in the economically emerging regions. Several million young women in Europe suffer from full or sub-syndromal ED, which underpins the European dimension of the proposed research. These disorders are associated with an elevated risk for physical and psychiatric disorders. Mortality is estimated up to 20% after 20 years for AN. Self-harm such as cutting and burning oneself is common, a high risk for co-morbid substance misuse is also present. The main objectives of the RTN are the improvement of knowledge about the processes of getting ill, getting well, and staying well and finally the optimisation of care for people with ED.
INTACT will accomplish these objectives in three main steps:
(1) developing longitudinal risk models to identify factors that further or hinder the development of an ED;
(2) developing a model of the course of recovery and
(3) exploiting this new knowledge to optimise care through individual tailoring. Novel approaches of aetiology (e.g. genetics), assessment (computer assisted monitoring) and delivery of care (e-health) will be used together with innovative methodologies of longitudinal research.
This research requires co-operation of specialists from psychiatry & genetics & psychology, public health & service research, biometrics & psychometrics, informatics & e-health. INTACT assembles academic and industrial partners with such complementary expertises. Thus, early stage researchers and experienced researchers will find a multidisciplinary and inter-sectorial environment that offers opportunities for training and research in new fields. Contributing to this research will foster their academic career and allow them to take the lead in innovative research.
