Objective
"Finite Element (FE) models of the human body have become essential research tools in the automotive safety field. They can be used in addition to the crash test dummies to evaluate the risk of injury during motor vehicle accidents and may be part of future regulations. There has been limited research related to Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) such as pedestrians, cyclist and motorcyclist as most existing FE models target the automotive occupant. The development of VRU models can benefit from the research effort on the occupant, in particular since the material properties of biological tissues do not depend on posture. However, it also requires specific geometrical and validation data. This proposal focuses on the geometrical aspects of the problem. Existing geometrical data available for FE modelling is mostly derived from post-mortem human subjects lying down on a flat surface. This can generate important artefacts when modelling humans in other postures as the geometry of the internal organs may be affected by the posture, gravity, and tissue changes after death. The aims of this project are to (1) collect geometrical data on the internal anatomy of human volunteers in standing, seating and riding positions (2) quantify the effects of the posture on the internal geometry (3) combine the data with the existing HUMOS2 model to develop geometrically improved VRU models. The data will be collected using a recently available non invasive imaging technique: open vertical MRI. This research will stimulate the development of VRU models and help understanding model positioning issues. The imaging data will be made available in the European Biomechanical Database as it can be useful for the development of other models and for the validation of model positioning procedures."
