Multi-particle quantum correlations in ultra-cold atomic gases

Obiettivo

In quantum optics ultra-cold atoms currently serve as quantum simulators for concepts developed in condensed matter theory, such as the Bose-Hubbard model or the Tonks-Girardea gas. Recent developments include atomic analogues of nano-science devices like the single electron transistor or the electronic quantum dot. The goal of the present project is to work out theoretical schemes, using methods developed in condensed-matter theory, for generating multi-particle quantum correlations in quantum optical systems, namely in optical lattices and multi-well systems.

One part of the project consists in designing a periodically emitting source of single cold atoms using a series of atomic quantum dots to out-couple atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate, involving nano-science concepts developed for the single electron shuttle. The focus of the project will be to develop experimentally feasible strategies to generate mesoscopic super-positions of condensates.

This project will be carried out in the Cold Atoms Group of t he Nobel-prize winner Professor C. Cohen-Tannoudji (which is now officially managed by Jean Dalibard and Christophe Salomon) at the ENS in Paris. It will be pursued in collaboration with the head of the theory group, Dr. Y. Castin, in close interaction wit h the experimentalists of the group, who are currently starting a research project to experimentally realise mesoscopic engagement in condensates.
