Applying new genomic technologies into the field of conservation genetics

Obiettivo

Many animals are endangered due to human activity. Large predators belong to the most vulnerable species since they usually require large natural landscape, which is rare and fragmented nowadays. Hence, the populations of most large predators are small, isolated and probably genetically impoverished. Methods used so far to analyse genetic structure and diversity of populations have drawbacks and are not easily converted to automation on large-scales. Recently, genomic research of model organisms has highlighted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as an abundant and easily genotyped source of genetic markers.

The aim of current project is to integrate the use of SNPs into conservation genetic studies of endangered wild predators. Target species include mammals (wolf and wolverine), as well as birds (white-tailed eagle, greater and lesser spotted eagles). The project aims to identify SNPs from the genomes of these species, develop multiplex systems for their amplification and genotyping, compare SNP-diversities with those obtained using other methods, and integrate these markers into ongoing studies of inbreeding, monitoring and population genetics of endangered large predators.

A better knowledge of the partition of the genetic diversity in the natural populations of these species may allow the reconstruction of population histories and redefining management strategies. The fellowship is intended to support the post-doctoral studies of Drulo Väli (Estonia) in Uppsala University (Sweden). Hence, the Project fulfils the objectives of EIF action work programme, which pursues the most promising researchers from EU and Associated Countries to undertake training through research in the European organisations most appropriate to their individual needs, and pretends to enhance research activity in the less-favoured regions of the EU and new Member States.
