Spin-sensitive ultrafast Terahertz spectroscopy to elucidate exciton dynamics in conjugated polymers

Obiettivo

The primary objective of this proposal is for the applicant to gain knowledge regarding the highly innovative spectroscopic technique of time-resolved Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy. In addition to the training aspect, important, fundamental scientific quest ions will be addressed, which are very relevant for the field of organic electronics one of the key strategic technological topics for the EU. In particular, I propose an extension of the standard THz approach to make it suitable for investigating, in conjugated polymers, the interplay between different spin states of excitons.

Excitons are the neutral excited state, in which the oppositely charged electron and hole are bound together, but have not yet recombined by photon emission. They, and particularly their spin state, are essential for applications of conjugated polymers in devices such as solar cells and light emitting diodes (LEDs). There is an intense debate regarding the role of triplet-to-singlet spin conversion of excitons formed upon charge injection, which influences the light emission efficiency in organic LEDs. These controversies may be traced to the lack of a clear and complete understanding of the specific interchain interactions that play a fundamental role in the charge carrier recombination process, especially at the early stages (i.e. on femtosecond timescales). This gap in this knowledge is caused by inherent limitations of many of the applied experimental tools. We propose to circumvent these drawbacks by investigating the spin dynamics of excitons in polymers in a quantitative manner with the help of this ultra-fast, all-optical, non-invasive technique based on THz spectroscopy.

This fellowship will reinforce the applicants' professional maturity and independence. In particular, applying this unique technique to key questions on the photophysics of organic materials for electronics will have significant added value, not in the least for the research purposes of his laboratory of origin.
