Spectrum sharing under power constraints

Obiettivo

Over the last decades, the radio spectrum has been crowded by blooming wireless communication systems. To cope with the demand, new spectrum sharing paradigms are needed that also take energy limitations of mobile terminals into account.

In this context, this proposal will jointly consider the design and implementation cost of advanced spectrum sharing algorithms over cognitive radios, to optimally trade-off system (transmission and computing) power and performance.

The candidate is PhD student at IMEC on cross-layer optimization with realistic system-level power-performance models of WLAN and sensor networks. This research has led to a patent, and several journal and conference papers. The goal of this project is to broaden the scope to heterogeneous networks and cognitive radios.

The targeted results on wireless spectrum sharing will strengthen expertise of the candidate in cross-layer optimization of future wireless networks. The host would be the top university UC Berkeley with several groups in the wire less domain (R.Broderson J.Rabaey A.Bahai) which are expected to have a large impact on the research of future cognitive radios and FCC spectrum regulations.

It is a great opportunity for researchers to be present in UC Berkeley, to take part in and contribute to the early research in this promising field. The project will enable to extend previous work with the hosting Distributed Sensing Group based on an earlier stay.

The European host IMEC is a research centre for training of PhD students and researchers, through European projects and bilateral collaborations with universities and companies. IMEC has expertise in wireless system design and implementation, with know-how and a hardware platform for power-optimized software-defined radio.

Broadening this knowledge towards cognitive radio and spectrum sharing will enable IMEC to extend its role as leading research institute in the field. IMEC is interested to strengthen the liaison with UC Berkeley.
