Cooperation in Hybrid Wireless Networks

Future wireless network applications are envisioned to feature very high data rates over large areas covering entire cities and beyond. Attempting to address anticipated requirements with conventional wireless network architectures is likely to be infeasible.

A solution relying solely on an increase in the number of base-stations will probably be economically doomed. This motivates the search for architectures that integrate different types of networks and combine their strengths. Such networks are generally referred to as Hybrid wireless networks.

As an example of a Hybrid network, a wireless LAN with a core infrastructure of access points complements a cellular network by supporting locally high throughputs and extending the coverage of the cellular networks to areas subject to severe path loss or fading, such as indoors or the cell periphery.

In another typical scenario, infrastructure nodes are employed to ease the inherent throughput 'bottleneck' of Ad-Hoc networks. In this research, we intend to present and explore a novel concept of cooperation among infrastructure nodes in cellular and Hybrid wireless networks.

Analytical tools from various fields, such as Information Theory, Game Theory, Random Matrices Theory, and Probability Theory will be used to enable cross-layer design, and to explore various performance merits of cellular and hybrid wireless networks with cooperative infrastructure nodes (base-stations).

The objectives presented in this proposal coincide with the following HRM objectives:
- enhancing the EU scientific excellence and competitiveness in the field,
- supporting regulatory and standardization efforts
- establishing long term collaboration between the EU and USA, and
- reinforcing the international dimension on the proposer's career.

In addition, we contribute to the following ERA actions:
- Broadband for all,
- Mobile and Wireless Systems and Platforms Beyond 3G, and
- Early warning systems for geo-physical hazards.
