Realistic supercomputer simulations for gravitational wave asteroseismology

Obiettivo

With several gravitational wave (GW) detectors already operating, the first signal detection is anticipated shortly. The challenge for data analysis is to extract signals from ambient noise, thus predictions of expected waveforms are essential.

We will per form the up-to-date most realistic numerical simulations of rotational stellar core collapse to a proto-neutron star (PNS) in general relativity. We will use a sophisticated equation of state, include a modern approximation scheme for neutrino effects, and take latest results from stellar evolution as initial models.

We will employ a fast and stable novel 3d evolution code, enabling us to surmount severe previous limitations, like symmetry restrictions, a crude matter model, Newtonian gravity, or numerical instabilities.

We will particularly focus on analyzing frequencies and energy content of various pulsations in the nascent PNS, as these are a source of potentially detectable GWs. A new formulation of the spacetime equations will enable us to extract GWs directly from the spacetime metric.

Our results will provide essential input for the emerging field of GW asteroseismology (GWA). GWA is concerned with interpreting measured signals from detectors and constraining still uncertain properties of matter in compact stars predicted by nuclear physics. Our project will extend GWA to include the significant effects of rotation and high temperatures.

In addition, we will investigate other promising phenomena for GW emission in rotating PNSs such as the appearance of instabilities. If confirmed, these may prove to be even more important for GW astronomy than direct excitation of pulsations during core bounce.

As this project will use methods and resources of supercomputing, it will support and benefit from EU RTD activities on 'Grid-based Systems for Complex Problem Solving' and 'Information Society Technologies '.
