Distributed multi-objective optimisation for ad hoc wireless networks

Obiettivo

This proposal tackles the problem of ad hoc wireless networks optimization. Getting the best transmission quality in a wireless ad hoc network with limited resources is one of the main problems research has faced in this area in recent years. Solutions dev eloped are based on medium access and routing protocols.

The first difficulty for ad hoc networks is mobility: the changing pattern of users reveals the need for a trade-off between bandwidth maximization and access fairness in the protocols.

The second difficulty deals with energy: mobile units are often not power supplied and energy savings become critical for the protocol design. Consequently, medium access or routing schemes must implement a compromise between multiple objectives (e.g. energy savings, network latency).

The third difficulty is that the network application is not always known a priori. There are lots of specific applications, with various Quality of Service requirements. Multi-objective (MO) optimization algorithms have been designed to pro vide a set of Pareto-optimal solutions when optimizing two or more antagonist criteria.

Each solution represents a given trade-off between the criteria. We propose to formulate the wireless network optimization as a multi-objective problem solved in a distributed context. Therefore, this project aims at developing protocols based on an MO approach where criteria dealing with latency, energy, throughput and access fairness are optimized. The main benefit will be to adapt the behaviour of the MO protocol with respect to the kind of network deployed.

This can be done by choosing in a distributed manner a solution in the set of Pareto solutions leading to the global feature needed by the application. For example, protocol promoting energy savings will be suitable for sensor networks deployed in hostile environments, whereas protocols increasing the throughput will be preferred for high rate ad hoc or mesh networks.
