Obiettivo Control of leishmaniasis is being challenged by the emergence of natural resistance against the first line treatment - pentavalent antimonials (SbV). Monitoring and prevention of the spreading of drug resistance is now a priority for the control of leishmaniasis. In order to design and develop the required epidemiological tools, it is essential to understand the mechanism of natural SbV resistance and to gain insights into the dynamics of the emergence and/or spreading of drug resistance.Within this context a multidisciplinary fundamental study is required to gain a comprehensive understanding of the natural SbV-resistance phenotype, including molecular basis, biochemical profile, and effect on parasite survival.
