Eastern European disillusionment and EU enlargement

Ziel

The overall aim of this project is to carry out a detailed analysis of the nature of disillusionment (often addressed as pessimism) in eight Eastern European countries that have joined the EU in 2005 - Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia - as well as the two that will join in 2007 - Bulgaria and Romania - and determine the likely impact that this disillusionment will have on the European Union as well as the accession process.

This overall aim will be achieved through a series of scientific objectives:

Objective 1: to determine, describe and categorize the specific nature of disillusionment in each of the ten countries in question.

Objective 2: to determine the likely impact of this disillusionment on the EU access ion process by looking at how the EU illusion is being constructed as a solution to this disillusionment and assessing the extent to which this is realistic or not.

Objective 3: to apply the findings of this research by developing a new analytical framework for understanding the role that specific illusions play in larger social transformations (such as transitions from one economic and political structure to another) and suggest better ways to manage them.

These objectives will be achieved through a series of specific tasks and qualitative methodologies, including keyword searches of important databases, content analysis, thematic assessment, and building comparative frameworks and visual maps.

This research project will allow Anca to undertake important re search training while at Birmingham, adding important complementary scientific competencies required to achieve a position of professional maturity and independence. With this experience, Anca will gain the necessary skills needed to successfully apply for a lecturer position in Europe.
