Non-linear effects in string instruments: Perception and modelling

Obiettivo

The share of music generated by sound synthesis applications within sound production and entertainment, multimedia and game industry is growing rapidly. Physics-based sound synthesis seems to be one of the answers to these growing needs. The method models the sound generation mechanism of the instrument rather than the generated sound itself, which is more common in commercial sound synthesis applications. Modelling of non-linear string behaviour is a recent topic within the field, which was initiated because certain characteristics of musical instruments cannot be modelled by linear theory.

The main goals of this research are to assess the perceptual importance of non-linear components in string instruments and to develop more elaborated modelling techniques. As a part of theoretical work, the non-linear string model developed by the researcher will be further elaborated in order to include two transverse polarizations and the effects of string termination. As a part of multi-disciplinary research in the field of psychoacoustics, formal listening tests will be conducted to assess the audibility thresholds of non-linear components in piano tone and give an indication how the changes of string parameters influence sound quality. Listening tests will be made to estimate the importance of non-linear components in other string instruments (guitar, harpsichord, clavichord) and a physical model of one of these instruments (where the phenomenon is most prominent) will be developed.

The results will not only be useful for t he sound synthesis and music technology community, but also for the makers of real instruments. The research project will be conducted with a strong cooperation of other researchers of the Acoustics Laboratory and will utilise the synergies of different competencies. Besides scientific knowledge, the fellowship would allow the researcher to gain more experience in teaching, mentoring and supervision of Ph.D. students, and in the management of projects.
