Multifunctional molecular switches based on Prussian Blue analogues

Ziel

Mixed valence polycyanides (Prussian Blue analogues) are prototypical multifunctional materials. They possess a rich palette of properties spanning room temperature ferromagnetism to zero thermal expansion which can be easily tuned by chemical modification s or the application of external stimuli (temperature, pressure, magnetic field, light irradiation). The versatility of the M-CN-M molecular-scale building block (M and M are divalent and trivalent transition-metal cations) can be exploited to prepare novel multifunctional magneto-optical materials. However, while molecule-based materials can combine physical and chemical properties associated with molecular-scale building blocks, their successful integration into real applications depends primarily on higher-order properties- crystal size, shape, morphology and organization.

A new frontier in this area would be to develop approaches in which interfaces can play simultaneously the dual role of (i) structure-facilitating features in the assembly of nano-networked architectures as space confining reaction media and (ii) of facile tuning, coupling and optimisation of the functionalities of the materials both in their bulk form and during their positioning at surfaces. Within this context, the project involves the use of clay minerals as structure directing interfaces to afford low dimensional networks and nano-scaled high order architectures based on the cyanide M-CN-M building block.

This will allow the control of size related properties and will lead to the production of molecular materials with organization on multiple scale length. In addition, the use of such templating agents will provide ready-to-use and easy means for transferring the materials in a controlled fashion to solid supports opening the way for the preparation of thin films based on metal cyanide architectures whose magnetic and optical multi-functionalities can be coupled and tailored a priori.
