Development of environmentally friendly cast alloys and composites

Obiettivo

The castings production was in Poland [in metric tons]. In 2002:389494 grey iron, 101907 nodular iron, 44005 cast steel, 97922 Al alloys, 72 Mg alloys, 6605 Zn alloys. In 2003: 423000 grey iron, 93200 ductile iron, 46500 cast steel, 134500Al alloys, 6300Cu alloys, 8100 Zn alloys (modern Casting - Dec. 2003, pp 23-25 and Dec. 2004, pp 25-27). The production of the Mg and Zn alloys is still very small as compared to the Fe one, though Poland produces significant amount of pure zinc. Replacing some amount of Fe-based castings with the Zn-based one is very important for environmental protection, because the Zn-based alloys are called pollution-free alloys. They are also relatively cheaper as they have a low melting point, which allows saving on energy costs.

Within the frame of the proposal we would like to increase our knowledge in the following fields:
- grain refinement - a key factor for rational control of the solidification process, aimed at obtaining optimal properties: collaboration with Prof A. L. Greer (University of Cambridge), the European authority in the theory and practice of the grain refinement of non-ferrous foundry and wrought alloys,
- modelling of the solidification and feeding processes - a cheap tool, which helps to avoid technological mistakes: collaboration with P. Schumacher (University of Leoben), the European authority in modelling of foundry processes,
- rational production of the metal matrix composites needs knowledge about engulfment of the reinforcing particles and nucleation phenomena occurring on their surfaces: collaboration with Prof. A. L. Greer and Prof. P. Schumacher, the European authorities in the theory and practice of the MMCs.

This transfer of knowledge will allow an increase in the Polish development of environmentally friendly cast alloys and composites as well as an increase in integration with the older European community Members, i.e. United Kingdom and Austria.
