Galaxy evolution through Cosmic Time

Ziel

Galaxies are the beacons that light up the distant regions of the Universe. Galaxies are also the building-blocks that chart the Universe. Understanding galaxies is essential for undertaking precision cosmology. Yet, their formation is still a mysterious process. Modern cosmological models are very successful at explaining the largest structures in the Universe. Yet, a coherent picture of how galaxies form their stars the way we see them and their evolution through cosmic time is still missing. This proposal seeks to significantly enhance our understanding of how galaxies form and evolve.
This objective will be achieved by means of a synergetic study that brings together the most fundamental approaches to the problem. These are the development of galaxy evolution models as tools for interpreting galaxy data, the analysis of real galaxies, and simulations of galaxy formation in the framework of Cold Dark Matter cosmologies.
The novelty is to understand the properties of stars in real galaxies through cosmic epochs, and use them to construct galaxy formation theories. The properties of real galaxies will be inferred by applying new models for the light of stellar populations to modern observational data. We shall make use of data releases from observatories over the world. We shall then improve current simulations with the physics derived from observations and follow such simulations through cosmic time.
This will enable us to check the match between theory and observations up to the very early universe. Through an iterative process of model-data comparison, we will include new physical mechanisms for regulating the formation of stars in galaxies including stellar and AGN feedback. By containing all the important ingredients, our comprehensive approach will bring theory and observations closer. The result will clarify unambiguously whether the current world models are correct. This is important not only for the scientific community, but for society in general.
