Environmental Risk Management for Contaminated Marsh Land in Khanty-Mansiysk

Final Report Summary - ENRIMA CONMA (Environmental Risk Management for Contaminated Marsh Land in Khanty-Mansiysk)

The ENRIMACONMA project aimed to establish a research network with partners from Europe and Russia in order to identify gaps in existing knowledge and transfer the appropriate background for the improvement and development of a regional risk assessment strategy for oil-contaminated marshes. The project focused on the Khanty-Mansiysk region in Russia which is heavily contaminated due to oil production and transportation activities.

The ENRIMACONMA concentrated on knowledge mapping and exchange, development of research and innovation strategies and networking and information dissemination. A knowledge mapping report introduced the current situation and environmental problems of contaminated areas and provided an overview of the regional characteristics and the insufficient legislative framework. Remediation techniques that were widely implemented in Europe were also presented, while an extensive literature review provided relevant information. The weaknesses of the implemented monitoring, risk assessment and remediation systems were also identified, in order to develop a strategy for the necessary project activities.

The significance of a long-term multidisciplinary exploration plan, which would enable the detailed identification of environmental impacts and facilitate sustainable development, was highlighted. Moreover, a knowledge exchange platform was developed, including suggestions for approximately forty future research projects. The proposals were grouped in eight principal research categories, namely prevention, surveillance, identification of the unknown impacts, risk assessment, remediation, guidelines' formulation, permit process and long term exploration. It was estimated that the platform would enhance cooperation between oil producers, authorities and regulators, while exchange of international expertise would also be facilitated. The produced knowledge would be beneficial for a series of oil exploration countries, in spite of the unique climatic, geographic and hydrologic conditions of Khanty-Mansiysk.

Finally, the project consortium developed two specific proposals for actions in the examined area, aiming to evaluate the applied remediation techniques and formulate waste management options, which were welcomed by the involved local and national authorities.
