Obiettivo
The Finnish Researchers' Night project creates a wide coverage network of events organised during the European Researchers' Night on September 22, 2006. The project seeks to shorten the distance between researchers and citizens. It is aimed at the general public with a special focus on young people, motivating a new generation to enter a career in science and technology.
The main goals of FiReNight are to
- enhance public recognition of researchers and their role in society,
- strengthen the positive ideas of being a researcher and
- increase the interest of young people towards science and technology careers.
To attain the project objectives FiReNight will organise several events in six cities in southern, eastern, central and western Finland. Events will include a night in a science centre with researchers for upper secondary school students, plays and performances, researchers' introductions in supermarkets, researchers' cafes, workshops, hands-on learning experiences, web meetings with professors, guided tours in research locations etc.
As a network of events, the FiReNight project can produce national marketing and PR to all of the events. Furthermore, as a national event, FiReNight will gain wide media coverage, which gives opportunity for those not attending to familiarise themselves with researchers and their work.
Events will be organised by the University of Helsinki, the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Vaasa and the Science Centre Heureka, while coordinating participant will be the Academy of Finland.
All participants have earlier experience in organising similar events. The project coordinator in the Academy of Finland works as a National Contact Point for Science and Society in the EU 6th Framework Programme.
