DYNARC aims to redress the paucity of knowledge of colonization processes and interactions between benthic macro-organisms in the Arctic coastal zone. The project would examine recruit variability dictated by Arctic environment dynamics. Project aims to reveal fundamental unknowns in the Arctic such as underlying structure to shallow seabed communities and diversity influences on these. Besides focus on development of new communities of Arctic marine ecosystems, DYNARC project will investigate the species composition and physical forcing on ecosystem structure. In addition, it will combine topics such as systematics, taxonomy, ecology, biodiversity and ecological modelling into a combined study on colonization and community development on sessile marine benthic organism groups.
Comparative aspects of the project will include study sites ranging from the coast of Northern Norway to Svalbard that will yield vital information and knowledge about the structure and dynamics of Arctic ecosystems. By including these sites, spanning the full range from the North Atlantic (Northern Norway) to a truly high-Arctic environment, we will be able to both compare and predict differential effects on colonization processes enforced by ice-scouring intensity, strength of wave action, ocean temperature variability as well as general trends in Arctic climate changes scenarios.
The project focus on marine resources, and will provide new and important knowledge that will be of paramount importance for the local management of standing stock of various marine species. Project DYNARC falls within the priority issue in the 6th European Framework Programme theme Global Change and Ecosystems, topic Biodiversity and Ecosystems.
