Nano-cavity organic laser arrays realized in holographic sculptured polymeric structures

Ziel

The aim of the project is the experimental realization and characterization of ultralow threshold tuneable organic lasing structures. It has been demonstrated in the past, that under particular conditions, a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) material doped with a dye component (or a mixture of them) can constitute a lasing system. It has been also shown that the lasing threshold of this system inversely scales with the volume occupied by the active medium. Hence, the confinement of the dye-doped cholesteric material within nanosized cavities can result in an ultra-low or even zero-threshold lasing system.

These cavities can be sculptured in a suitable photosensitive polymeric substrate by means of a highly precise and very short-pitched periodic light pattern obtained by holographic techniques and afterwards filled with the CLC-dye mixture. The cited techniques are very flexible and ensure a huge variability in the choice of the experimental parameters. This represents a research key point to reach a full optimization of the system and hence the success of the project.
