Controlled thermonuclear fusion. Association Euratom/Etat Belge

Obiettivo

A) Ecole Royale Militaire - Koninklijke Militaire School

The research programme of the LPP-ERM/KMS during the period 1988- 1992 is concentrated on the following main lines related to the ion cyclotron heating of large machines:

- Extensive studies of ion cyclotron on TEXTOR (at KFA Julich) with the upgraded ICRH system at the level of 4 MW and for pulses of 3 s.
- Theoretical activity on problems related to ICRH.

B) Universite Libre de Bruxelles

A programme on dense and strongly coupled plasma transport theory will be continued in the forthcoming period.

Finally, a programme in laser theory will also be pursued.

C) SCK/CEN Mol

A programme along the following lines is envisaged:

a) NET and long-term technology
- Blanket and first-wall engineering
- Ceramic breeder materials
- Liquid metals
- Structural materials
- Remote maintenance
- Tritium (Electroyse, extraction from Pb-17Li,aqueous self-cooled blanket)

b) JET related tasks

ASSOCIATION EURATOM/Etat Belge (ERM/KMS)

History of Association/Laboratory

The Association started in 1969 with the team of the Plasma Physics Laboratory of ERM/KMS and with the Plasma Physics group of Chimie-Physique II of ULB. In 1982, CEN/SCK became the third group in the Association.

Present scientific and technical programme

Theory and experiments of ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) of tokamaks. The Laboratory has full responsibility for the 4 MW-15 second ICRH system on the TEXTOR tokamak of KFA Jülich. It is also concerned with the physics of heating (neutral beam injection and radio frequency), current drive, confinement and plasma edge properties with ICRH, neutral beam injection or combined operation on TEXTOR.

Staff

Professionals : 24
Support staff : 9

Yearly budget (expenditure 1994): about 7.2 MioECU (including the ULB and SCK/CEN Research Units)

Management structure

Head of Research Unit : P. VANDENPLAS (also coordinator of activities within the Association)

Collaboration with other institutions

Collaboration with the Association "Euratom-KFA", Forschungszentrum, Jülich (agreement dated March 25, 1981).
The activities of the Euratom-Etat Belge/Belgische Staat Association cover also work undertaken in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (by means of a sub-contract) in the field of remote maintenance.

ASSOCIATION EURATOM/Etat Belge (ULB)

History of Association/Laboratory

The Association was founded in 1969: at that time it had two branches: Ecole Royale Militaire and Université Libre de Bruxelles. Later, the Centre d'Etude Nucléaire (SCK/CEN) joined the Association.

Present scientific and technical programme

- Theoretical Problems of Plasma Physics in connection with fusion research.
- Transport Processes in Plasmas.
- Study of Plasma Turbulence, in connection with transport and heating.
- Current drive.

ASSOCIATION EURATOM/Etat Belge (SCK.CEN)

History of Association/Laboratory

An initial contract of collaboration, on thermonuclear fusion research, between the Association Euratom-Belgian State and the SCK.CEN was concluded on December 22, 1975.
In 1982, the SCK.CEN became an associated laboratory.

Present scientific and technical programme

The fusion work at SCK.CEN focuses on environmental tolerence of opto-electronic and electric components, on materials characterisation and recently also on fusion reactor safety. In the near future the SCK.CEN work in the technology field for thermonuclear fusion will continue in the above mentioned fields. For a medium long range SCK.CEN envisage to embarque on integrated tests of fusion machine components.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)
