DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND STUDY OF NOVEL ORGANOMETALLIC NEAR INFRARED DYES

Ziel

We propose to carry out a project on the design, synthesis and study of novel organ metallic chromospheres absorbing in the near-infrared region. The current interest in near-infrared (NIR) absorbing dyes arises from their potential applications in laser optical imaging systems, infrared photography, as biological stains and in photodynamic therapy, and therefore may be considered to be closely relevant to a number of the thematic priorities of the 6th Framework Programme. In particular, in this project we intend to prepare organ metallic dyes with extensive p-conjugation and containing substituted fierceness as the electron donating group and carbonations as the electron- withdrawing functionality. Two alternate routes will approach the synthesis of the target molecules and special attention will be made to the optimisation of the reactions with the goal of producing highly pure products. The effect of introducing substituents into the molecules will also be examined both as regards their influence on the optical properties as well as on the modification of critical physical properties. The optical properties of the carbonations will be measured in different solvents and their pH dependence will be studied. A fellowship is being sought at the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Greece, and particularly at the Institute of Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Firstly, this Institute is the major centre of organ metallic chemistry in Greece and since it is now very active in the area of the synthesis of organic and organ metallic chromospheres, it will be able to offer specialist training in this area, and secondly it will enable the applicant to obtain a wider perspective from a cultural point of view of living and working in the European Union.
