Patient self-help is essential in the management of migraine and chronic daily headache. A multitude of management strategies are available to the patients to help reduce the burden of these headaches. Few studies have explored the patient's perspective of headache management. Studies to date on the patients' perspective focused predominantly on health care and medication use apart from the applicants PhD work, and recent studies of the Headache Group in Rotterdam, no studies have been carried out on the holistic management.
The aim of this project will be to study the management behaviours that migraine and chronic daily headache patients in the Netherlands, France and Belgium use to help manage their headaches.
The study will be based on a postal survey, using a Headache Management Questionnaire, which was devised as part of the applicant's PhD research on the management behaviours of migraine and chronic daily headache patients in the UK.
The study will also include the Migraine Quality of Life Instrument (MSQOL) and the EUROQOL. A comparison will be drawn between the patients' behaviours of the different European countries and the behaviours of male and female headache patients.
The study will also investigate the influences of different health care systems and patients' quality of life on patient management of headache .The findings of this project wail help to empower the patients and to inform headache researchers and clinicians, and other health care professionals about headache management. Increased knowledge of the patients' behaviours, particularly between the different headache types and within different health care systems, may help to better understand patients' preference. This may help to further adapt and individualise management to the patients' needs or highlight areas for educating patients to achieve more effective management in terms of treatment outcome and cost-effectiveness and to improve the patient's quality of life.
