FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES OF THE SUPERIOR TEMPORAL POLYSENSORY AREA AND THEIR ROLE IN THE "MIRROR SYSTEM"

Ziel

The present application aims at obtaining a fellowship for a young French researcher, permitting him to carry out a post-doctoral stage. The host laboratory is the Institute of human physiology, located in Parma (Italy) and directed by Pr Rizzolatti. After a preliminary conversation, Pr Rizzolatti has proposed to the candidate Ludovic Escola to participate in a large project concerning the "mirror system", a brain function supposed to be implicated in action understanding. The part the candidate will have to deal with is an electrophysiological study of the properties of the superior temporal polysensory area (STP) of the monkey, and their relation with the "mirror system". Ludovic Escola seems to be a good candidate for this work since he has acquired during his doctoral formation a solid background in electrophysiological investigations in the monkeys of different aspects of motricity. Moreover, this stage offers him the opportunity to learn recent techniques such as multi-unit recordings of neuronal activity and echography, which he will then be able to develop in the laboratory he comes from. So this experience is certainly a real gain for his future career as a researcher. A last profit, but not least, is the possible construction of collaboration between two European laboratories working each on differentaspects of motricity, thus strengthening the European scientific Community.
