Molecular Ruthenium Catalyst for Fine Chemistry

Obiettivo

The project aims at the development of molecular catalysis for fine chemistry via the design of ruthenium catalysts and the discovery of new combinations of molecules. The use of new catalysts will improve the outcome of useful reactions, increasing significantly atom economy, mild conditions and selectivity. The development of new catalytic carbon-carbon bond reactions by ruthenium complexes, through the combination of simple and cheap materials (alkenes, alkynes, dienes) via clean processes, will contribute to new ways of production and sustainable development. Two approaches based on the activation mechanism will be considered, the first one involving the regio-selective oxidative coupling of two unsaturated substrates at the metal site through metallacycle intermediates, and the second one the activation of terminal alkynes towards nucleophiles via vinylidene intermediates. Target reactions will be the catalytic coupling of unsaturated hydrocarbon to perform a mild access to added value intermediates for pharmacy and to vitamin intermediates. The ruthenium catalysts will be of the type RuX(L)2(C5R5) and[Ru(L')(L)2(C5R5)]+, bearing labile L ligands, and ancillary L1 ligands such as phosphine, imidazolylidene carbene and others. For the second approach [Ru(L-L)(C5R5)]+ with tightly bonded chelating L-L ligands, in order to maintain only one vacant site. The C5R5 and X group scan be modulated in both cases by their electron-richness and steric hindrance to control catalytic activity and the regio-selectivity. A search for the optimal conditions will be carried out for all new catalytic reactions obtained by this approach, to improve yield or selectivity. The evaluation of catalytic activity will be carried out by HTE (High-Throughput Experiments) - Combinatorial Technology. Mechanistic studies with characterisation of possible intermediates by specifically designed stoichiometric reactions, and simple theoretical analysis.
