Holistic Integrated Process CONtrol

Final Report Summary - HIPCON (Holistic Integrated Process CONtrol)

The project was created to develop holistic process control methodology and prototype software enabling production management to account for product quality, as well as economic and environmental values. This has been achieved with an integrated approach that led to a versatile software package with extensive functionality for real-time monitoring, advanced control, simulation and multi-objective optimisation in industrial environments.

One of the main objectives was to demonstrate the added value of this approach in real production processes at full scale. Case studies were implemented at SSAB Swedish Steel in Oxelösund and Henriksdal waste water treatment plant, Stockholm. Through their application of the software, both achieved annual savings of many thousands of euros, accompanied by reduced chemicals consumption and a more uniform output.

Following completion of the project in December 2006, new projects have already been initiated for some of the industrial partners. Furthermore, in order to meet future demands for software upgrades and support, the consortium has started work on setting up a legal entity, with the main task of converting the research results into commercial products.
