Magnetic resonance imaging compatible cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators

Final Activity Report Summary - PACEMAKERS AND MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging Compatible Cardiac Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators)

In this work, we developed magnetic resonance imaging compatible cardiac pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) technology. It is known that, if a person with implant enters into a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, the tip of the implant lead may heat up due to induced radiofrequency currents that are applied on it.

In this study, we developed methods for measuring the amount of the excess radiofrequency (RF) heating caused by the implants. We worked on the design of pacing leads that were MRI compatible using a modification of the safe coaxial cable technology. We found that there was no need to change the case of the implantable pulse generator (IPG) and tested the design on animals and phantoms. By the time of the project completion we already planned to work on other types of stimulators, such as deep brain stimulators (DBS), in the future.
