Co-ordination action on defects relevant To engineering advanced silicon-based devices

Obiettivo

The CADRES Consortium consists of scientists researching into the detailed properties at an atomistic level of silicon-based materials. This Co-ordination Action will provide a European focus for discussion and interactions between members of CADRES with those concerned with novel or high performance silicon-based device design and development. CADRES will reinforce European strengths in areas where it has established technology leadership, by the setting up of highly focussed Expert Groups in scientific areas currently considered to be of importance to researchers into device enhancement. "Leadership" is in state-of-the-art assessment and modelling of defects in silicon-based semiconductors.

The bringing together of these researchers means that the infrastructure will be in place in Europe to continue to effectively address this topic in the 65nm era, post-2007, as defined in the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). The scientific objectives of this Co-ordination are: to use and develop a variety of complementary defect assessment techniques already existing in Europe to build comprehensive models of typical or common process induced defects; to use our expertise in defect/impurity dynamics in silicon and silicon-based semiconductors to help facilitate device development in these material systems, by providing scientific input gained from fundamental materials studies into silicon-based device development programmes; and to assess whether materials assessment or modelling tools will need to be developed to ensure that materials studies continue to support the ITRS.

The principle result or outcome of this Co-ordination Action will be creation of the infrastructure and relationships required for the effective dissemination of the knowledge between these groups, and hence informing planning and management of current and future research and future research programmes.
