Coherent sources and micromachining for imaging, wireless communications, and sensing at terahertz frequencies

Exciting opportunities at terahertz (THz) frequencies are emerging in science and engineering. Striking images of tooth decay or skin cancer have been obtained with biomedical THz imaging, and the nonionizing nature of THz radiation eliminates the issues that are commonly associated with X-rays and radioactivity. In addition, many molecules have distinct signatures at THz frequencies, so changes in composition are easily detected.

Impressive results from DNA molecules with minute changes suggest that very selective interactions occur at THz frequencies and point to applications in gene sequencing. THz communication channels can provide an intersatellite link or, in picocells of digital wireless networks, the terminal link from a fiber-optical network at Tbit/sec to the end-user at several 10 Gbit/sec. Compact antennas emit narrow beams without the alignment issue associated with infrared lasers or wide beams for area coverage.
