Knowledge transfer for digitisation of cultural and scientific heritage in Bulgaria

Ziel

On-line presence of information is closely related to the 'voice' of different cultures in theglobal information society. On the current European scene, where cultural differences andsimilarities are playing a key role in the integration of the Old contine nt, this process is ofspecial importance. Information technologies have offered cultural institutions enormousopportunities for presentation and access to various resources using Internet, but this cannotbe claimed for cultural heritage collections in Bulg aria. They still cannot be widely accessed inelectronic form, and expertise of those working in the field is fragmented. This project is structured as two-phase development scheme. In the knowledge acquisitionphase, it envisages 36 person-months for acquiri ng state-of the-art knowledge in digitisationof cultural and scientific heritage, including general methodology, digital imaging, text corporaannotation, cataloguing systems and web publishing. The following partners of high expertisein the mentioned speci fic fields will support this process: Charles University Prague, TrinityCollege Dublin, Copenhagen University, and NCSR "Demokritos" in Athens. The second phase, knowledge transfer envisages 48 person-months for visits to the host. It isstructured in two st eps: direct guidance, and consolidation of the transferred knowledge sothat the host institution starts serving as a national digitisation centre in Bulgaria. The basic impact of this project would be that current fragmented local knowledge will beintegrate d and thus will not only support Bulgarian digitisation endeavours, but will serve as amodel of a holistic approach.Additional outcome of the project will be in filling a currently existing gap in the Europeane-space where Slavonic cultural heritage is pre sented in scattered and non-unified manner. This heritage will attract growing interest in the next years, when the first Slavonic countries.
