Development of solid oxide fuel cells technology for stationary applications based on biomass gasification and natural gas

Obiettivo

The main project objective is to increase the long-term research capacity of the Institute of Power Engineering (lEn) located in Poland (Accessing Country) by development and establishing a new competence in the fuel cells combined with the biomass gasification.

This will enable lEn transition from present energy coal-related research to investigation of sustainable energy systems. Such objective is coherent with the obligations of the Polish government to the EU to implement of 7.5% energy from renewable sources on the Polish market at 2010.

The lEn has R and D program on the gasification of biomass and solid oxides fuel cells (SOFC) and has an ambition to join with this program to the most advanced partners in Europe in a period of three to four years. The lE n has the necessary infrastructure and experienced staff in the field of traditional electro-ceramics, combustion processes, burners, modeling, electricity conversion, etc. In order to shorten the introductory period of acquiring expertise in SOFC, extensive knowledge transfer is required.

The IEn wish to invite senior researchers for a transition period of up 4 years to help in the development and maturing of the SOFC technology at home. Moreover, lEn has a substantial knowledge and experience in the field o f combustion and gasification of coal and partly biomass gasification. lEn's researchers will go to the EU laboratories for up-dating their knowledge and experience in this subject.

Transfer of knowledge is aimed to achieve more specific technical objectives:
- Optimisation of the biomass gasification process for the SOFC application;
- R and D of the electrolyte supported cells (ESC), the anode supported cells (ASC), and metal substrate supported cells (MSSC): Building and operating of the testing stations for t he fuel cells;
- Designing and construction of the fuel cells stack, modelling of the SOFC systems, and cost calculation;
- Incorporation of the gasification and FC program developed at IEn into EU networks.
