Nitrogen symblotic fixation inthe genetic diversity of common bean

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is traditionally grown by farmers in Galicia (Nortwestern of Spain) during the warm season. The crop has been an important protein source for human diet for centuries. Common bean is often grown in marginal lands with lim ited available soil N, and with minimal fertilization. It is often considered as a poor N2 fixing legume wich explains why it is cultivated with a complement of mineral nitrogenous fertilization. The global objective of this project is to increase the c ompetitiveness of common bean varieties by improving nitrogen fixation capacity, and therefore, enhancing yield under sustainable production systems in low fertility soils. Moreover in this purpose inoculant strain for reference areas will be selected. I f so, the means to improve biological nitrogen fixation, common bean yield and the crop sustainability would consist in ensuring the expression of the common bean potential to fix N2 with native rhizobia by the inoculation of the selected common bean wi th the corresponding most efficient native rhizobia This project should contribute to the rural development of the area and to the sustainable production of healthy protein for human consumption.
