Advanced vaccinology training for scientists from ACC and Developing Countries: from genomics to vaccination strategies for communicable diseases linked to poverty.

Obiettivo

The overall objective of this training is to create a critical mass of people, in Europe and in Developing Countries, with a sufficiently broad knowledge of vaccinology to be able to play a leading role in decision-making processes related to (i) pre-clinical vaccine research (go- no go), (ii) design and monitoring of clinical trials (iii) vaccine safety issues (iv) selection of new and appropriate vaccination strategies, including economic aspects and (v) communication. A 2-week Advanced Course of Vaccinology will be organized annually in 2005-2007 by Mérieux Foundation and University of Geneva in Veyrier-du-Lac (France) .The course will comprise top-level lectures, followed by interactive discussions, and specific practical exercises in small working groups. A particular attention will be given to vaccines against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. An important aspect of the course will be the promotion of contacts and international networks. Care will be taken to maintain a full independence from any influence of a commercial nature. English will be the official language. Each year, an international Scientific Committee will select 60 participants, including 30 from ACC, DC, and East European countries. The course will be targeted at young professionals already or soon involved in vaccine-related research and strategic issues. The course will also be co-sponsored by US-NIH, CDC, WHO, IARC, ESPID, Univ. of Geneva, Johns Hopkins SPH and main vaccine producers, that will second lecturers. An independent evaluation is planned. Funding from EC will ensure that scientists from Associated Candidate Countries (ACC), Developing Countries (DC), Russia, other NIS, and Western Balkan could benefit from fellowships for travel, housing and registration. Other participants will be asked to contribute to course expenses (registration fee) with a reduced rate for academia and governmental agencies.
