Renovation of science teaching in European primary education with inquiry methods

Objetivo

The development of society requires to meet one absolute prerequisite, the intellectual and moral development of Man. From this viewpoint, an early education in Science, Inquiry based, should be of great help, not only in order to give children a basis in technical knowledge, but also to aim at universalism, research, openness, modesty and civic responsibility, so highly requested in our times of instability and violence. In a number of countries (USA, Hands-on; France : La main à la pâte ; Sweden : NTA ; C hina...) a renovation of science education has been launched in the last decade based on the principle of an inquiry-type teaching (building of hypotheses, experimentation, team-work and written expression). This renovation, which has already given substa ntial results, also requires a major effort to be developed towards teacher's training, resource elaboration, and educational research. The framework of Europe, is most adequate for such an endeavour, taking into account the educational ambitions and goals fixed in the work programme for the horizon of 2010. This can be enhanced by the common cultural ground of EU countries combined with stimulating differences as far as pedagogy is concerned. This 3 year project is proposed and supported by Estonia, France , Hungary, Portugal and Sweden - all countries having a solid background in this field and aims at renovating science education in elementary schools through : 1/ The establishment of a Network, allowing exchanges and enhancing the development of good prac tice (in the fields of Resources, Teachers' training and companionship, Evaluation and Dissemination) and supported by an Internet Website dedicated to teachers, scientists and policy-makers. 21 The creation of a physical Network Coordination, based in Fra nce, animated by a Project leader, constantly interacting with the 5 partners in order to reach the objectives, and structured in 6 Work packages and 15 Deliverables.#'
