Coordinating the integration of the European census microdata

Ziel

The overarching aim of Coordinating the Integrated European Census Microdata (CIECM) is to organize a exploratory workshop to co-ordinate the European census microdata integration based on multiple rounds of population and housing censuses in at least 17 European countries. This workshop, which will be held at the Centre dEstudis Demogrfics, located at the Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona, at the end of September 2005, pursues the following objectives: (1) Marshall the expertise of the broadest possible range of statistical experts and academics, to ensure that the integration of census micro- and meta- data is performed in accordance with the highest standards; (2) establish the foundation for regular contacts between researchers coming from different countries and disciplinary backgrounds to identify the opportunities and obstacles for developing comparable census microdata. Grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation of the United States cover the costs of fin ding and preserving microdata and documentation, negotiating dissemination agreements, developing data cleaning and sampling procedures, creating data conversion and dissemination software, and establishing design protocols for data and documentation. Ho wever, to fully capitalize on the potential of European census microdata, a more focused regional approach is needed. National experts from the participating institutions will have opportunity to discuss a broad range of topics related to the European ce nsus microdata integration project. CIECM will add value to the European database and ensure higher comparability, which will better reflect the census practices of the European states. The European classifications will take advantage of commonality in s ocial structure and similarity in census questionnaires across the region to create more streamlined classifications.
