On the use of mesoporous and macroporous materials for the micro-structural optimisation of anode materials for Fuel Cells Application to gas natural oxidation

Final Activity Report Summary - MEMANO (On the use of mesoporous and macroporous materials for the microstructural optimisation of anode materials for Fuel Cells. Application to gas natural oxidation)

The main objectives of this project were:
1) test and improvement of the materials obtained in University of St Andrews in 2004. In this sense a new material La4Sr8Ti11Mn0.5Ga0.5O37.5 (LSTMG) was tested and the results published in Nature, 2 February, vol. 439, 2006, p. 568-571.
2) the design of a symmetrical fuel cell using the same material as both cathode and anode. A new material La0.75Sr0.25Cr0.5Mn0.5O3-z was found to be stable and with good electrochemical properties in oxidising and reducing conditions. The fuel cell shows promising performances, exceeding the 500 mW/cm2 at 950 degrees Celsius under humidified H2. The results has been recently accepted for publishing in Electrochimica Acta, vol. 52, 2006, p. 278-284.

3) to develop a new method of optimisation of the electrode microstructure. This was obtained using an organic material as a frame. It allows a total control of the thickness and porosity of the materials under study. The result has been published early this year in J. Mater. Chem. Vol. 16, 2006, p. 540-542.

Additionally to all of this, the structural, electrochemical characterisation and catalytic properties of several materials were or are under investigation and several publications are expected for this year showing the aforementioned results.
