Devlopment and evolution of animal form: training modern comparative zoologists

Ziel

Linking classical evolutionary biology to modern molecular developmental genetics has led to the emergence of a new, rapidly expanding field called Evolutionary Developmental Biology (Evo-Devo). This inter-disciplinary field, that integrates traditional comparative anatomy, systematics and paleontology, with modern molecular biology, developmental genetics and molecular phylogenetics, has recently begun to address many of the major unsolved questions of animal evolution. The main purpose of ZOONET, is to educate a new generation of comparative zoologists through teaching, training and research in this exciting new area of research. Research topics addressed by this network will include:
- the resolution of phylogenetic relationships among major animal groups - the understanding the molecular mechanisms and events that underlie the generation of animal diversity%:L- the development new approaches for genetic analysis and for identification of novel gene functions in non-model organisms.
- the origin of key features of animals including segmentation, appendages and the head and brain In achieving these objectives, ZOONET will create a world class collaborative network of workers with diverse complementary skills.

An important product of our research will be the establishment of new approaches for studying basic biological processes in diverse organisms, strengthening European research in the area of 'Genomics and Biotechnology for Health' as well as a better understanding of biodiversity, suppporting research in the area of 'Global Change and Ecosystems'.
