Functional Genomic Approaches Targeting Arthritis

Ziel

The Research Training Network, EURO-RA, brings together leading groups in the field of Arthritis research in Europe. The Network primary aim is to offer training on functional genomics methodologies to early stage and experienced researchers. The Network additional aim is fostering the transfer of knowledge between the participating European laboratories. The network will achieve these aims through collaborative research projects and transfer of knowledge tools such as workshops, courses, meetings and secondements. The main scientific goal is to capitalize on the modern postgenome methodologies such as genome-wide expression profiling, proteome analysis, comparative genomics , and genome-wide mutagenesis and linkage analysis to study Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis is the most common chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease affecting the European population.
It is a systemic, inflammatory, progressive, chronic destructive disease affecting primarily peripheral joints, that is associated with pain, disfigurement, and various extraarticular manifestations. This combined effort of 12 research groups from 9 European countries aims to identify genes that determine the onset, progression and chronicity of autoimmune arthritis. This in turn will provide an excellent opportunity to improve our knowledge on in vivo disease mechanism and, hence, to develop more rational forms of therapy. The Network primary aim is to offer training on functional genomics methodologies as applied to autoimmune research to early stage researchers and to and foster transfer of knowledge between the participating European institutes.
