Final Report Summary - BREMEN TRAC (COFUND Fellowships for Transnational Academic Careers)

BREMEN TRAC – COFUND Fellowships for TRansnational Academic Careers’ programme covered a period of 60 months from February 2013 to January 2018.
Under the heading “Bringing the world to Bremen” the University of Bremen offered 18 outstanding newly minted PhDs to pursue their own research project in Bremen and thus become independent, being highly skilled and practically trained in interdisciplinarity. With no thematic restrictions, research topics and hosting institutes at the University of Bremen could be freely chosen. BREMEN TRAC explicitly targeted excellent researchers residing outside Germany and offered 24 months fellowships (https://www.uni-bremen.de/de/forschung/foerderangebote-service/ausschreibungen/bremen-trac-cofund-fellowship-program.html). The BREMEN TRAC selection process was highly competitive and based on an internal quality assessment by experts from the university’s faculties serving on standing funding committees (https://www.uni-bremen.de/en/research/support-for-researchers/research-committees-at-the-university-of-bremen.html) followed by independent international peer reviews and video interviews.
Out of 70 eligible applications, 18 fellows (7 male, 11 female) were awarded within calls in three consecutive years (2013-2015). Their projects, covering 5 scientific disciplines (CHE, SOC, ENV, MAT, PHY), have been published on our website (https://www.uni-bremen.de/de/forschung/foerderangebote-service/ausschreibungen/bremen-trac-cofund-fellowship-program.html). In order to create the best environment for productive research, we made sure that fellows´ projects fruitfully tied in with the research conducted at the University of Bremen. All fellows were linked to a host professor at the University of Bremen to ensure close exchange with established research groups and the provision of all necessary infrastructures.
This concept was a great success. BREMEN TRAC fellows were remarkably successful in terms of publications and conference contributions. They strongly benefited from the collaborations established and the experiences they gained during their fellowship by having been offered attractive jobs and subsequent funding.
