SCIENTIA-FELLOWS: International Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme

Periodic Report Summary 3 - SCIENTIA-FELLOWS (SCIENTIA-FELLOWS: International Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme)

Together with the end of the last reporting period, SCIENTIA FELLOWS (https://www.med.uio.no/english/research/scientia-fellows/) completed the transnational career development programme for young research talents. During five years there were three open calls for applications. In 2018/2019 the last Fellows concluded their fellowship research periods in excellent research environments with training in translational, multidisciplinary research skills, as well as got acquainted with a set of management and entrepreneurial skills.

The overall objective of SCIENTIA FELLOWS was to stimulate and promote the career development of experienced researchers who show promise to be Europe’s future scientific leaders, through a comprehensive programme of transnational mobility globally in the area of Health Sciences. To achieve this goal we:
• provided excellent research environments and infrastructure
• established a post-doctoral programme consisting of incoming and outgoing fellowships
• provided transnational exchange/interaction between academia, hospital and health industry
• designed the training to maximize the career prospects of the researchers by the development of translational, multidisciplinary research skills along with transferable skills including entrepreneurship, dissemination and management.

The programme, which had a budget of 16.7 million € and an EU grant of 6.7 million €, with a total of 180 person-years, ran from the 1st May 2014 for a period of 5 years. It offered two types of mobility schemes. The incoming fellowships (12-24 months) were open to Fellows from all over the world willing to conduct their research work at the University of Oslo, Norway (UiO). The outgoing ones (12-24 months) were designed for those who applied to work as a seconded/visiting researcher in a host organisation outside Norway and to continue with a second phase (12 months) at the UiO. In all cases, eligibility rules of MSC actions applied.
In the third reporting period of the project there were no calls and no new Fellows started their contracts. In total, 84 international Fellows participated in the programme. The number of active Fellows was gradually decreasing throughout the last project period.

SCIENTIA FELLOWS developed into a solid international postdoctoral programme, with a focus on career development. Through fair and transparent evaluation and selection procedures, talented fellows of more than 30 nationalities were recruited to dynamic and excellent research environments.
All Fellows had access to a high quality Career development programme developed by SCIENTIA FELLOWS. Topics of the available courses, offered free of charge, ranged from Grant Writing for H2020 to Leadership and Research Management, as well as focused on Career Development planning. In addition, fellows were offered a special opportunity to take part in the innovation and entrepreneurship programme - School of Health Innovation – a new course programme established at Faculty of Medicine, UiO. It was established in order to provide healthcare and life science researchers with tools and insights into how innovation can be put to work for the benefit of the patients, the healthcare system and the society. The cooperating partners on this undertaking are Karolinska Institute (SE) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
